As an accomplishment, "Oppenheimer" now seems to me to overshadow "Past Lives", but I deeply respect both for what they achieve on different scales. Celine Song clearly seems poised for an extraordinary career.
For me, they lodged in the form of the mind-body problem. I was enamored with Oppenheimer's vision (I have written about it here on Substack) but Past Lives dunked me in a heady mix of nostalgia I didn't even know existed. Ha!
" . . . didn't even know existed. Ha!" I felt exactly the same way. The movie got into a region I couldn't have put my finger on before. It's exceptional, no question. I don't recall seeing what you wrote about "Oppenheimer" here on Substack, or have I seen it already and forgotten? Can you give me a link? Thanks again for sharing views.
Still haven't seen the new Poirot movie so will be reading the review only after I watch it. And so glad to have come across your Substack via the Literary Hub article on Oppenheimer which felt skewed in my opinion.
Picture of the year! YES!
